On October 11, the You Go Girl! Awards returned to Hamilton, honoring young Black girls for their exceptional achievements in a range of categories, from entrepreneurship to health advocacy. Hosted by Sisters in Sync in recognition of International Day of the Girl, the event celebrated inspiring young women making an impact in their communities. Each honoree’s story highlighted resilience, ambition, and a commitment to creating positive change.

Mariam Oyinyole: Young Entrepreneur Making a Global Impact
Mariam, winner of the Entrepreneurship Award, expressed how meaningful it was to be recognized at such a young age. “Winning this award really means a lot to me,” she shared, explaining how Sisters in Sync had created a welcoming space for young entrepreneurs. Mariam’s company, Abimbola, offers eco-friendly menstrual products designed to reduce waste and support menstrual health. “I didn’t want to use products with chemicals linked to health risks,” she said, sharing her inspiration for creating reusable pads and period underwear. Looking to the future, Mariam hopes to expand her brand internationally and to donate products to girls facing poverty and crises globally, emphasizing, “Reusable menstrual products should be accessible to everyone”.

Diana Anyim: Empowering Wellness in the Black Community
Diana Anyim, founder of the Ultra Black Run Club, received recognition for promoting mental and physical wellness within the Black community. Speaking passionately about her club’s mission, she said, “It’s amazing to see so many Black women, of all ages, showing up and supporting each other.” Her club recently organized a 650-kilometer fundraising run from Toronto to Montreal, a journey meant to demonstrate the power of community support. “Running to Montreal does not sound appealing alone, but with friends, it shows the strength we have when we do things together,” she said, highlighting the importance of Black representation and safe spaces in fitness.

Najma Hassan: Inspiring Confidence and Perseverance
Najma Hassan, the winner of the Youth Extra Mile Award, was recognized for her volunteer work with local organizations like the Boys and Girls Club. Reflecting on the significance of her award, she noted, “As a Black Muslim woman, it’s about facing my fears and proving others wrong.” Najma offered encouraging advice for other young women: “Do what makes you happy, and don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you otherwise.” She hopes to continue her community work and inspire others to persist through challenges.

Ademide Abogunrin: Advocating for Black Student Representation and Healthcare Equity
Ademide Abogunrin, honored with the Leadership Award, shared her journey of founding a Black Student Association (BSA) at her school to create a safe and supportive space for Black students. "I realized there was a problem with Black students not being advocated for, and I wanted to change that," she explained. Ademide envisions a future where she can address healthcare gaps for marginalized Black women through a career in nursing and public service, stating, “Everything I do, I do for Black girls.” She hopes to foster environments where Black women’s voices are heard and their health needs are prioritized

A Team Effort Behind the Scenes
Vashti D, Sisters in Sync Fundraising and Partnerships Coordinator, praised the collective effort of the team and highlighted the event’s mission. “We’re trying to create spaces for Black women and girls where they feel supported, where they can access mentorship, job opportunities, and mental health support,” she said. The event is about building a foundation so that young women can “excel beyond where we were.” Reflecting on the importance of mentors and community, she urged young women to explore their interests freely, saying, “Get your hands dirty, try something new, find mentors—there’s so much talent waiting to be tapped into”.
