Derin Falana Brings "Candles & Timebombs" To The Remix Project Showcase

The Brampton rapper celebrated the release of Candles & Timebombs alongside Kalisway, Thelonious and Divine Lightbody during a free night of Toronto music.

On Friday, August 7, The Remix Project brought a cross-section of Toronto’s emerging music scene to Union Station for an open-air alumni showcase featuring Kalisway, Thelonious, Derin Falana and Divine Lightbody. Part of TD Union Summer’s final weekend of free programming, the event transformed the station’s patio into a space for local music, community and discovery.

For Street Voices, the night’s central story was Derin Falana. Falana arrived at the showcase on the same day he released his new album, Candles & Timebombs, giving the performance the feeling of both a celebration and a new beginning.

Falana has long built his music around reflection, patience and the realities of pursuing an independent career. His early work established him as a thoughtful voice within the Greater Toronto Area’s rap scene, while later projects showed an artist willing to step back, reassess and return on his own terms. Candles & Timebombs continues that journey, adding another full-length chapter to a catalogue that includes Rocky Mountain, Don’t Save Me and 2025’s Back to the AKA.

Released on August 7, the album places Falana’s calm, conversational delivery at the centre of a project that moves between ambition, uncertainty and self-belief. Tracks including “Good Call,” “What’s The Word,” “But I’m Playing” and “On Tap” reflect the directness that has made his work resonate: his writing often feels less like a performance of certainty than an honest record of someone working through life in real time.

That made Union Station a fitting setting for the album’s arrival. Thousands of people move through the building every day, each on the way to somewhere else. On Friday evening, however, the patio became a place to pause. Falana’s appearance connected a major release day to the city and community that shaped him, allowing new music to be experienced not only through headphones and streaming platforms, but in a shared public space.

The wider lineup also demonstrated the range of talent connected to The Remix Project. Kalisway brought her blend of funk and alternative R&B, a sound shaped by colourful production and the influence of ’80s soul. Rexdale rapper Thelonious represented another side of the city’s hip-hop landscape through polished lyricism and a musical foundation rooted in jazz. Divine Lightbody rounded out the showcase with an R&B perspective grounded in vulnerable songwriting and musicianship; the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has steadily built a name through music that values emotional honesty.

Together, the four artists made the showcase a snapshot of how contemporary Toronto music actually sounds; artists with distinct and fused approaches sharing one stage.

That range also reflected the purpose of The Remix Project, a Toronto-based arts incubator that works to reduce barriers for young creatives pursuing careers in music, performance and other creative industries. Alumni showcases like Friday’s make the impact of that work visible. They give artists room to present what they have developed through mentorship and collaboration while giving audiences the chance to encounter local talent in an accessible setting.

Union Summer’s Soul Sessions series was designed around live R&B, Motown and familiar sounds reimagined for an outdoor crowd. The Remix Project showcase expanded that frame, emphasizing original voices and the creative paths of artists building careers in and around Toronto. As part of the final weekend of the summer series, it also offered a reminder of what free public programming can do: turn a familiar downtown space into a platform for the city’s artists.

For Derin Falana, the timing carried particular weight. Releasing an album can often feel like a digital event; links go live, posts are shared and listeners press play in different places. On August 7, Candles & Timebombs entered the world with a crowd gathered in the heart of Toronto. The moment brought Falana’s newest chapter off the screen and back to where his story began: in community, in the GTA and in front of listeners ready to hear what comes next.
