By Ashley Baez

On June 12, latin artist Looch Bodega released a compilation of afro beat songs as his new EP entitled “Beba”.

Bodega collaborated with his long-time Cuban music producer Kadel to put together five songs for the EP, which include: Mia, Poco, Trust Nobody, Llevate de Mi, and Loca.

Within two weeks of its release, Bodega was highlighted throughout various music platforms in the city including Toronto’s Top 6ix, Hoy Toronto, and Toronto Dominicano.

However, it’s not only Toronto listeners showing the artist love. Listeners from Mexico, Spain, and the U.S. have presented themselves on social media singing and dancing to their favourite songs from the EP.

his childhood was spent in the Dominican Republic, then moved back to Toronto during his adolescence. the “Mia” artist has embraced both his Canadian and Dominican culture through his Spanglish songs and his versatile beats.

“The reason I landed on Afro-beats is because all my friends here in Toronto are African. Whenever my friends and I are listening to music I’m like, “This sounds like merengue!”” says Bodega. Merengue was created in the Dominican Republic, and the sounds of its guira, yembe, and accordion highlights the Taino, African, and European influences of the land.

This blending of sounds has inspired Bodega to continue learning about the musical roots of his background, and to continue experimenting with the infectious percussion in Afro-beats that bring people together to dance. “It’s one vibe,” says the artist. “We’re all one”.

Bodega isn’t the only one getting in touch with their dominican roots. When asking Bodega about his creative process, he says, “I put a beat, and I hold my baby. I start singing melodies to each beat. If my baby rocks to it, then I know it’s a hit and I got it right.”
