This Giving Tuesday, Support Black Women’s Health Through Art

For Giving Tuesday, the Black Women’s Institute for Health (BWIH) is holding a silent auction that centres a special original artwork created by painter Nicole Alexander. The piece, titled Voices Unheard, was made specifically for BWIH’s national health survey of Black women and girls; the first study of its kind in Canada.

The artwork is a 48 inch by 60 inch acrylic painting that serves as the visual anchor of the report. It brings forward the emotions, realities, and strength reflected throughout the findings. A group of Black women is shown standing together, carrying words that have shaped many of their experiences with the health system: underdiagnosed, understudied, overpoliced. In front, a Black woman sings with a sense of power and clarity. The letters BWIH appear across her chest. Her stance signals that this is a moment shaped by both truth and collective determination.

BWIH chose to build the Giving Tuesday auction around an art piece because creativity and storytelling are central to the way the organisation works. The report is based on nearly two thousand responses from Black women, girls, and gender diverse people across the country. These stories deserved to be reflected in a medium that honours their depth, diversity, and complexity. Art holds emotion in a way that data alone cannot. This painting carries the weight of a historic first: Canada is hearing these experiences at a national level for the very first time.
